Who we are

About the Somali Language Centre

We're a family-founded community centre with one simple goal: to help the next generation speak the language they grew up hearing. Here's how we started, and why it matters so much to us.

Our story

It started at home

The Somali Language Centre began with a worry that a lot of Somali families in the diaspora will know well. Amaal and Ibrahim could see that the younger ones around them understood their mother tongue perfectly. They followed every word at the table, but when it was their turn to reply, the Somali just wouldn't come and they'd answer back in English.

As a second-generation family in the UK, they went looking for help and found there was very little. Plenty of other languages have well-established classes, textbooks and apps, but Somali had almost nothing offered with the same focus and care. So they decided to build it themselves.

That was the start of a simple idea: to make learning Somali easy to get to, and open to everyone. Today the centre brings together experienced teachers and keen students, and keeps the learning enjoyable the whole way through, because a language you enjoy is a language you keep.

Why it matters

A language worth holding on to

For a lot of second-generation Somalis, the language is quietly slipping away. It's understood, but not spoken, and we're here to change that.

Understood, but not spoken

Many children follow Somali at home yet reply in English. Without regular practice, that gap only grows wider with each year.

Few places to learn

Other languages have classes, resources and apps on every corner. Dedicated Somali courses, especially for children, are still hard to find.

More than words

Somali is the thread to grandparents, poetry, faith and a sense of self. Keeping it alive keeps families connected across the generations.

Our mission

Somali, open to everyone

We believe learning your own language shouldn't be hard to find. Whether you're starting from your very first word or reconnecting with one you half-remember, we offer friendly, high-quality classes in East London and online that help you read, write and speak with confidence.

Above all, we want it to feel welcoming. Beginners and heritage speakers, children and adults all have a place here, and everyone gets to take pride in a culture full of poetry, storytelling and tradition.

“Our children should never feel like strangers to their own language.”
